The young woman bathed in the sun is Shawna X. She was born in China and moved to Portland with her parents when she was seven. She is now an independent creative artist, currently living in New York, known for her vibrant and graphical image-making across mediums in digital and motion spaces. Beyond commercial collaborations with brands including Adidas, Adobe, and Ghostly International, Shawna enjoys non-profit and personal projects discussing cultural identity, sexuality, and the modern creative process.

Speaking of emotional encounters, Shawna has also undergone a role change recently -- she has just become a mother. “I am embracing MUM ENERGY” she told the media. On this new form, the psychedelic, intense, tender, and nurturing responsibilities all converge at one point. Her new experiences as a mother have completely reshaped her identity, which is evident in a series of new works produced after the birth of her daughter.

Shawna's work, which began after the birth of her daughter, focuses more on the topic of women. Now as a new mother, navigating the industry with a little baby at her side and the responsibilities that come with it, Shawna also offers up some useful advice to other mothers experiencing something similar. “Take your time. You are in a very vulnerable space in your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual journey,” she says. “Take your time to hibernate and let your power sit for a little bit. Feel your power, let it nurture you and your child.”

Patriarchy still deeply influences the art industry, and the role of motherhood has made Shawna rethink it. She wants to call more attention to the role of women in society. “Many people can use the flexibility of a freelancer. I do believe the landscape of parenthood is evolving and I know the industry will adjust accordingly. Perhaps I’m too idealistic right now but the point is, I know I can make it work.” Shawna says.
